One of the many missions of the Feist-Weiller Cancer Center is to train specialists in cancer care. With 15 hematology-oncology fellows, FWCC operates one of the largest fellowship programs in the Southeast United States.
Fellows are internists who embark in advanced specialty training. After completing the three-year hematology-oncology fellowship, many remain in the area or choose to practice elsewhere. Approximately one-fifth of the practicing hematology-oncologists in Louisiana trained in the Shreveport program. Former FWCC fellows are practicing in Shreveport, Monroe, Lafayette, Alexandria, Baton Rouge, Leesville and Mamou. Six physicians finished their fellowship June 30, 2007. Of these, three will practice in Shreveport—at Willis-Knighton, Christus Schumpert and Christus Highland. The other three will begin their practices in West Virginia, Iowa and Tennessee.
FWCC’s fellowship program is very competitive. Each year approximately 100 applicants compete for the five spaces.
Five new fellows will begin work at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center during summer 2008.
