Head and Neck Cancer Screening

More than 70,000 Americans are diagnosed every year with cancer of the head and neck region--those cancers affecting the mouth, lips, tongue, voice box and neck. Less than 60 percent of head and neck cancer patients live five years after diagnosis and more than 90 percent of all head and neck cancers could have been prevented.

The Yul Brynner Head & Neck Foundation sponsors Head and Neck Cancer Awareness Week in April to champion awareness of this disease, which could result in an earlier diagnosis, lower functional disability, and higher survival rates.

Friday, April 25, 2008, the Department of Otolaryngology / Head & Neck Surgery at LSUHSC-Shreveport directed by Cherie-Ann Nathan, MD, and Feist-Weiller Cancer Center, offered a free screening to look for signs of cancer affecting the mouth, lips, tongue, voice box or neck.

Call (318) 675-6262 or visit www.yulbrynnerfoundation.org  for more information about this April screening.

Pros vs. Joes Exhibition Baseball Game
Benefits Prostate Cancer Research

The second annual Pros vs. Joes baseball fundraiser to support nationwide prostate cancer research was Saturday, May 3, 2008 at Fairgrounds Field. Professional baseball athletes tested the skills of the best amateur baseball players in north Louisiana of the Shreveport-Bossier Men’s Senior Baseball League.

Last year’s Sports/SBMSBL rivalry helped the Shreveport-Bossier League raise $5,000, which ranked the Shreveport-Bossier League 2nd in the nation only to the New York City League, which raised $12,500. This year the SBMSBL wants to be ranked #1 in the country in PCF donations out of 200 cities affiliated with the MSBL.

Art work created by young people in our community is selected at Art Break and framed by Feist-Weiller Cancer Center. This work will hang for one year in the hospital rooms of cancer patients at LSU Health Sciences Center. Art work and a community art reception will be at Feist-Weiller Cancer Center in late August.

2008 Life Savers Party - was September 20, 2008

FIGHTING THE BATTLE...FINDING THE CURE!

The 2008 Life Savers Party was held at the 8th Air Force Museum... and it was a hit.

The casual party was tented, right beside a static display of airplanes.  This party featured a large silent auction with high-flying auction items, a catered dinner, dance floor and open bar. The fabulous band from Atlanta, Party on the Moon, was back by popular demand and they were amazing.

We'll have photos from the event here soon.

Great Pumpkin Run for Research - was October 25, 2008

Ghosts and goblins, fairy princesses and hobos gathered at the Gold Dome on the Centenary College campus on Kings Highway. The 1/2 mile fun run began at 8:00 a.m. and the 5K run followed. Standard entry fees apply. The course ran through residential areas and many participants are seen dashing around in costume.

Cash prizes of $250, $150, and $100 were awarded to registered teams with the most runners. Prizes were also awarded to youth and adult costume contest winners, and to youth pumpkin carving contest winners. It was Halloween, so the dress up was amazing! Other events included face painting and an after-party with snacks and music! For more information on next year, call Sportspectrum at (318) 798-1241 or FWCC at (318) 813-1056. Register online at www.sportspectrumusa.com.
